How the Online Canadian Citizenship Test Works

In 2026 most citizenship tests are taken online. Here is how it works, the invitation, the webcam check, the 45-minute format, and how to prepare.

How the Online Canadian Citizenship Test Works

Since IRCC moved the citizenship test online, most applicants now take it from home instead of at a government office. It is more convenient, but the format catches people off guard if they do not know what to expect. Here is how the online test actually works in 2026.

You can only take it after you are invited

The test is not the first step. You take it only after you have applied for citizenship and IRCC has reviewed your file. If you are between 18 and 54, you will receive an email invitation with a link and a deadline, usually 30 days to complete the test.

While you wait for your invitation, the smartest thing you can do is start practicing. There is no reason to wait. You can begin studying by chapter right now so you are ready the moment the invitation lands.

What happens on test day

When you start the online test, you go through a few steps before the questions begin:

  • Identity check. You re-enter your application number and unique client identifier (UCI), then take photos of your ID and yourself through your webcam.
  • Monitoring. During the test, the system takes random photos through your webcam to confirm your identity and that you are working alone.
  • The test itself. 20 multiple-choice or true or false questions, with a 45-minute time limit. The timer cannot be paused. You get a warning when 5 minutes remain.

You need at least 15 of 20 correct (75%) to pass, and you get three chances.

What you need before you start

Make sure you have a quiet, well-lit room, a computer with a working webcam, a stable internet connection, and a valid piece of photo ID. You do not need to be in Canada to take the online test, you can take it from anywhere, even a public library computer.

How to prepare for the format, not just the content

Knowing the material is only half the battle. The other half is being comfortable answering 20 questions under a ticking clock. Many people who know the guide well still feel rushed on test day simply because they never practiced against a timer.

That is why it helps to rehearse in the exact same shape as the real thing. Take a timed mock exam, 20 questions, scored out of 20, so the real test feels familiar. Do a few of these and the 45-minute format stops feeling stressful.

Quick checklist before your real test

Run through this the day before: you have read every section of Discover Canada, you are consistently scoring above 15/20 on practice exams, your webcam and internet work, and you have your ID ready. If all four are true, do one final practice run and walk in confident.
